You’re looking for an educational facility that will empower your children to think creatively and critically, pursue lifelong learning, and contribute positively to the global community.
To achieve this, teachers must be exceptional and the curriculum should provide the framework for your children to both answer the questions and question the answers. The school campus must be safe, and nurture students in an international outlook necessary to be successful in today’s world. Simply put, there are many items on your checklist.
To help make your research easier, we’ve explored essential areas of what makes an excellent international school in the content below.
We have helped over 50 organisations in Australia and New Zealand transform their management of content using workflow, automation and integration.

“All throughout the school I see that the students are very inquisitive and this is directly related to the quality of the teachers.” - Julian B., NIS Parent
For any school to be a success, students, parents, and staff need to fully embrace the school mission. To ensure this, NIS teachers are recruited from a global pool of candidates selected for their proven track record in education as well as for their qualifications and experience.
Our highly skilled teachers make the classroom interactive, collaborative, and work hard to ensure all perspectives are considered.
“Our facilities are built for purpose; our classrooms are laid out in a flexible way. Our classrooms are designed for specific things (like for science or music or design) and our teachers are able to change things up depending on the subject and lesson that they have planned.” - Carol Walter, Director of Business and Operations at NIS
When choosing the right international school, considering the facilities is essential. A campus should make you feel as though you’re walking through a park with greenery, open areas, fresh air, and flexible learning environments.
At NIS, our campus includes architecturally distinctive buildings providing safe and comfortable spaces for all students. These facilities encourage learning in all areas and include:
Classrooms have an open feel, are flexible, have interactive whiteboards, and utilize technology via a robust school-wide wifi network that students can access - see in the classroom example above.
We've recently built a new state-of-the-art building devoted to secondary math, science, and the arts, making our campus even more exceptional. To learn more, click here.
When choosing the right international school for your children, a well-established history is an important factor to consider.
The longer a school has been in existence, the more connected students and staff are to the local community, the wider the alumni network, and the more recognizable they are on a university or college application.
Here at NIS, we have a rich, 56-year history. Our curriculum and facilities have grown with our changing world, making sure to incorporate best practices and educational research to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students. What has remained constant is the purpose in which we were formed - to meet the needs of the community we serve.
“Children are taught the tools needed to get information, analyze it, and create. They are taught to find problems and work on solutions to solve those problems. The students’ minds are constantly thinking about solutions to situations that teachers present to them.” - Gabriela O., Former NIS Parent
It’s only through an innovative, personalized, internationally-recognized curriculum, delivered by skillful teachers, when children can develop such characteristics.
Our program represents the contract we have with parents to ensure the highest quality of education for your children. We have chosen to frame our curriculum through the three programs of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program which represent the world standard for international education:
The IB program aligns perfectly with our mission and commitment to NIS students. It helps students develop a passion for learning and fosters a spirit to support their local and global communities. And the rigor of the IB program also provides advantages when choosing pathways and applying to colleges or universities around the world.
According to a study by the Higher Education Agency (HESA), students graduating from the IB have a greater chance of getting accepted into college or university than applicants with similar qualifications.
Want to speak with someone about what an international education in Japan could look like for your family?
When it comes to choosing the right international school in Japan, it’s important to ensure that the school is able to strongly support language development.
While English is the primary language of instruction at NIS, our community embraces the many varied linguistic backgrounds of all our students. We believe language acquisition aids in the development of intercultural awareness and open-mindedness.
At the same time, our community feels strongly about the importance of learning Japanese, and Japanese language study is required for all students from ELC K through Grade 12. Other languages are optional from Grades 11 and 12 as part of the IBDP program for an additional cost through an online provider.

“This is a great school and that leads to a lot of opportunities for kids in the future whether they want to go to university overseas somewhere or to a university in Japan. I think NIS is a great stepping stone to a lot of opportunities.” - Bryce C., NIS Parent
These opportunities stem from our curriculum, our world-class teachers, our excellent facilities, and
our campus environment that fosters a lifelong love of learning in our students.
Ultimately the end-goal of our program is to ensure a smooth transition to another international school, a school “back home,” entrance to an appropriate college, university, or a pathway that students choose to embark upon.
Not only do students graduating from NIS receive a NIS diploma, they may also earn an IB diploma. Through their education here at NIS, our graduates gain admission to some of the best colleges and universities worldwide.

“At NIS, it’s not just about going to school and going home -- there’s so much more. The way that our co-curricular programs balance academics helps our students make connections through the skills and dispositions taught both inside and outside the classroom. Because of that community piece, the whole package of an international education hits so many marks, there’s something for everyone.” - Marika Farrell, NIS Secondary School Associate Principal and IB MYP Coordinator
Choosing the right international school includes looking into the type of community found both on and off campus.
Here at NIS, our community consists of educators, families, friends, and businesses working together in partnership to ensure the success and happiness of our students. We know that by including everyone, students are better able to learn and grow in an environment with each member supporting our mission.
To get involved, we encourage parents to join Parent Partner-related activities; the more parents who join, the more diverse the perspectives, the better the experience for the students.
By involving our greater community, our students develop a better understanding of themselves and their world - a true international experience.
